Livingston County School District had the opportunity to apply for a Universal Design for Learning grant whereby strategies could be funded that would allow all students the ability to access the general curriculum through the integration of technology. The premise is that if technology is used as an integration into the curriculum, rather than as an "add-on", all students will be able to access the curriculum that is provided. We think of Universal Design for Learning and technology as a "Super Highway to Success".
Our vision is to continue the process of integrating a "Universal Design for Learning (UDL)" beginning at the Smithland Elementary School and continuing our goals at South Livingston Elementary. Using Smithland Elementary as a "pilot school", we will increase our use of technology, design lesson plans that incorporate strategies for all learning styles, and share our ideas with others across the district. At South Livingston we will continue to implement UDL strategies in order to allow all students access to the general curriculum.
This 2006-2007 school year we are implementing UDL at South Livingston Elementary. We have established 2 model classrooms for teachers in-house, across the district, and from other districts to visit and observe strategies used to implement UDL. Other classrooms are implementing UDL strategies to some degree and are becoming more familiar with technology and how it can be used in the classroom to allow all students access to the curriculum.
We have applied for and received the UDL grant this year (2007-2008) as Phase I schools. As a Phase I school we will be mentoring one or two of the six Phase II schools that have been chosen. We will be sharing the knowledge that we have gained from implementing the UDL strategies in our classrooms.
